National Apprenticeships Week 2020 – Tom’s story
In honour of National Apprenticeships Week (3rd – 7th February 2020), we’re celebrating the fantastic impact that apprenticeships have on individuals and employers alike.
Today we hear from Tom, who is part of our Learning and Operational Development (L&OD) team.
“I decided to apply for an apprenticeship because I wanted to train for a career while still working full time. I had no prior experience in business administration, so I was fully starting from scratch when I was offered the role at Alliance.
“A typical day in L&OD involves helping colleagues keep up with their ongoing training. I liaise with external companies to arrange in-house training courses. When it comes to delivering the training, I meet with the trainers in person and help them set up their session on the day.
“I also help colleagues to book conferences as well as organising their transport tickets and accommodation for these events.
“My favourite part of my job is meeting new colleagues to help guide them through their induction. I talk them through how to use our staff intranet and what online training they’re required to complete. It’s great to see their enthusiasm and reassure them that there’s no need to be nervous!
“In the six months that I’ve been with Alliance, I have gained a level two qualification in English and a great deal of knowledge about how the housing sector operates. I am looking forward to obtaining my full qualification and am very grateful for the opportunity to learn business admin (and a lot of life skills!) with Alliance.
