National Apprenticeship Week 2019 - Lisa's story

This week we’re supporting National Apprenticeship Week (4 to 8 March 2019).

This annual celebration of apprenticeships will bring the whole apprenticeship community together to celebrate the impact of apprenticeships on individuals and employers just like us.

Today we hear from Lisa Hawkes, one of our Adult Carers Team Leaders for our support service tailored for young and adult carers.

“I jumped at the chance to apply as I knew Alliance would be a great company to work for and begin my new career as a support worker.

“As an apprentice, I assisted the rest of the support workers in the team with their cases, attending visits, and helping them to complete all different tasks to support their customers. Soon, I had my own cases once I’d learnt the skills needed to carry out the role. I was helping people sustain their tenancies, signpost to other support agencies, and cope with isolation, which can be common amongst people in a caring role.

“My manager was really supportive, allowing me to step out of my comfort zone to maximise my experience as an apprentice with the team. Nothing felt unachievable.

“Most of my friends went to college or straight into work after school. But when they found out about the experience I’d gained from my apprenticeship, many wished they’d taken the same route by getting a qualification and working at the same time.

“Three years on from doing my apprenticeship I’m now a Team Leader. To anyone else looking to do an apprenticeship, I’d say go for it! It’s been a stepping stone to a great career. I’ve now got more confidence in myself than I ever thought I could have.”
