Plans for new homes at Selworthy Road and next steps for Hillsborough House and Alexandra House

13 Oct 2025

We’re inviting local residents and stakeholders to share their views on early proposals for new homes at Selworthy Road in Weston-super-Mare.

The consultation includes the site at Selworthy Road and the nearby Hillsborough House building, which will become vacant in the coming months. Bringing these sites together gives us a chance to make best use of the land and deliver new modern, energy-efficient homes that meet local needs.

About Hillsborough House and Alexandra House

Both Alexandra House and Hillsborough House were built in the 1960s. Following detailed surveys, we found that while both buildings remain safe to live in, some parts no longer meet modern standards. After taking expert advice and considering all options, including major refurbishment, we made the difficult decision that the safest and most viable long-term solution is to demolish both buildings.

Our planning applications to demolish the buildings have now been approved by North Somerset Council. We’re planning to begin demolition next year and will keep local residents informed with clear timescales as things progress.

Supporting our customers

Since July 2025, we’ve been working closely with residents living in the two buildings to make sure they have the right support every step of the way.

Every household has been offered one-to-one help from our team, including:

  • Assistance finding a new home that meets their needs
  • Covering reasonable moving costs such as removals, carpets and curtains
  • Tailored support for anyone with additional needs

Almost all residents living in the two buildings have now been matched to suitable new homes and moves will continue over the next few months.

Why we’re using direct matching

To help residents move smoothly, we’re using a direct matching process, to prioritise rehousing people from Hillsborough House and Alexandra House. This will allow us to bring the buildings down as soon as possible and begin planning for the future of the sites.

We recognise this process has had an impact on the number of Alliance Homes properties available to bid on locally. We want to reassure residents that we are now at the end of this process.

Plans for Selworthy Road and the Hillsborough House site

We’re now bringing forward proposals for new homes on the land at Selworthy Road. Because the Hillsborough House site sits right next to it, we believe it makes sense to plan both areas together. This joined-up approach will help us make the best use of the land, design better public spaces, and deliver a scheme that fits the character of the local area.

In respect of Alexandra House, we’ll start planning the next phase of that site, after the buildings are taken down. When the time comes, we’ll speak with local residents and stakeholders to help shape how the site should be used.
