100 years young

11 November 2025

Alliance Homes customer shares her secret to a long and happy life.

Every birthday is special, but turning 100 is an incredible milestone. Earlier this week, Barbara Seaton, a resident at Martindale Court in Weston-super-Mare, celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by friends, neighbours and colleagues from Alliance Homes.

We joined Barbara to celebrate her birthday, hear what reaching this age means to her and what advice she has to share.

How do you feel at 100?

“I feel the same as I did at 26!”

You’ve experienced so much over the past 100 years, achievements, challenges and special moments. Is there one thing you’re most proud of?

“Raising two boys and two girls, and now I’ve got 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. I was also very overwhelmed and proud when I received an MBE from the Queen in the 1980s.”

What’s your secret to living to 100?

“Staying active and being involved with other people. My husband and I shared lots of hobbies. After he died, I joined groups and made friends. I became part of the archaeological and natural history club, a music group and an exercise group. I’m always busy.”

How has your birthday been?

“Marvellous! I’ve had so many bunches of flowers I’ve run out of vases. It’s lovely to celebrate with people in my community, and I’ve got another celebration with my family at the weekend.”

If you could give one piece of advice for young people, what would it be?

“Don’t spend too much time on phones and computers, get outside and get to know people!”

Kirsty Allsworth, Tenancy Officer at Alliance Homes, joined the celebration and said:

"It’s amazing to be here with Barbara today and see all the people who clearly adore her. It’s a joy to celebrate her 100th birthday together.”
