If your mobility is affecting your ability to live independently, we can make changes to your home, known as as adaptations, that will help you.

We can provide small adaptations or large adaptations. Because of how they are funded, there is a different process for each of these.

You can read and download our Adaptations Policy by clicking here

Small adaptations

Small adaptations can be easily installed in your home free of charge. Examples of what are considered small adaptations are shown below.

If you would like to discuss having any of these items fitted please contact us and we'll arrange for a member of our repairs team to complete the work. It may be necessary to carry out a preliminary visit to inspect where the adaptation will be installed but in most cases this will be done in one visit without the need for anyone to assess you.

If you are coming home from hospital, we can help by completing the work your Occupational Therapist has said is required for your discharge. Visit our Home from Hospital webpage to find out more about the service.

Large adaptations

Large adaptations are significant alterations to your home, such as removing a bath and installing a level access shower, installing stair lift or building access ramps.

This type of work will need to be funded through a, means tested, Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). The starting point in applying for a DFG is an assessment by an Occupational Therapist. This is arranged through your local Social Services (details can be found below) and they will visit you at home to assess your needs and agree options. Following the Occupational Therapist's assessment we will review their recommendations for your home

We can help by acting on your behalf with the local authority and oversee the whole process from start to finish. We will liaise with the local authority when carrying out this work.

Will I have to pay?

If you need a large adaptation to your home, you may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) to help with any costs. This is paid by your local authority.

To be deemed eligible for this you will have to complete a means test which is carried out by an Occupational Therapist from your local authority.

Will I get help from Alliance Homes?

We have a dedicated team providing design through to site management services. To help you when you are having your home adapted, Alliance Homes will act as your agent to help you get any grant that may be necessary and oversee the work on site. If there is a contribution for you to pay we will work with North Somerset Care & Repair to help you look for charitable funding.

Can I go somewhere if I am worried about disruption to my home?

If you're worried about disruptions caused by adaptations to your home, please speak to us. We’ll explore ways to support you.

How long will the work take?

Timescales will vary as no one adaptation is the same, we will communicate the timescales to you at the start and stay in contact during the process.

What choice will I be given?

Each large adaptation will be designed with you and your Occupational Therapist. We will agree the layout which will best meet your needs and give you choices of decoration colours.
