If you have solar panels on your house, this page explains how you can get the most benefit from the free, sustainable electricity they provide and how you might use them to reduce your energy bills.

When do solar panels generate the most electricity?

Every home is different, but here are some general guidelines:

Midday is best

Solar panels typically generate the most electricity around
noon, when the sun is at its highest point.

Summer months

Longer days and a higher sun angle mean more electricity is
produced in summer. In winter, shorter daylight hours and less
intense sunlight means less electricity is made.

Sunny days

Clear skies mean more sunlight and more electricity. Check the
weather forecast or simply look outside to gauge how much
power your panels might produce.

Check your smart meter

If you have a smart meter with an in-home display, this may
show when electricity is being exported. If it does, you can use
this learn when your peak times are. If you’d like help with this,
contact our Home Energy Advice Team on 0300 120 120.

How to use electricity when it’s being generated

If you know when your panels are generating electricity, to use the most of the free electricity, you'll need to know which items to use and how to use them.

Use high-energy appliances during peak times

Run appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, and
tumble dryers during sunny midday hours to reduce your
electricity bill.

Avoid overloading

Running multiple high-energy appliances at once may exceed
the electricity your panels generate. Spread usage across peak
times.

Use timers

If your appliances have timers, set them to start just before
peak generation times to maximise solar usage.

Frequently asked questions

Do solar panels need maintenance?

Solar panels have no moving parts and last around 25 years.
The systems are monitored remotely and we have a five year
service programme.

If we carry out work on your roof, we’ll ensure the panels are
returned to their original position.

If you do notice any issues, contact us on 0300 120 120.

Will the panels generate electricity during a powercut?

No, for safety reasons, in the event of a power cut, the system
will automatically switch off and switch back on when safe to
do so.

Can birds nest under the panels?

We are installing netting around solar panel systems to prevent
birds nesting. If your panels don’t already have netting, contact
us on 0300 120 120 to find out when yours will be installed.
