Your guide to ending your tenancy

When you want to end your tenancy, you should first get in touch with us so we can talk to you about the next steps. You must give at least four weeks’ notice and fill in a property vacation form. We will send this to you online through DocuSign. If you don’t have online access, we can arrange for a hard copy to be sent to you. You will need to provide us with the following information before you leave us:

  • The date you intend to leave
  • Your forwarding address
  • A contact telephone number.

What you need to do before you leave

Before you move out, there are a few things you’ll need to do to make your move as easy as possible.

Repairs

During your four weeks’ notice period, we will contact you to arrange a visit so that we can check any outstanding repairs and discuss any questions you have. It’s important we can do this, so we ask that you allow us access to your home.

Alterations

If you have made any alterations to your home, please advise us of these. All alterations must have been approved by Alliance Homes, and we will ask you for confirmation of this approval.

Leave your home in a clean and tidy condition

You should leave the property in good condition. This includes removing all rubbish, waste material and unwanted furniture, decorations and other possessions.

If you leave anything behind or damage the property, we will charge you for the cost of fixing it or removing any items.

If you need help removing large household items, your local authority may be able to help.

Make sure your rent account is up to date

Your rent should be up to date before your tenancy ends. We will send you an estimated balance of your account. If you need help repaying any outstanding amounts, our Income team can work with you to create an affordable payment plan.

Submit meter readings

Take gas, electric and water meter readings and share them with your utility supplier.

Keys

It is also important to leave all keys and fobs and label them. It’s also important that any family members return keys to you before you hand these back to Alliance Homes.

Access to Connect

When your tenancy has ended, you will continue to have access to Connect , our online customer portal, for six months.

If you are moving to another Alliance Homes property

If you're moving to another Alliance Homes property, we will discuss the end date of your current tenancy to make sure you're not responsible for paying two rents at the same time. Unless you ask for extra time between the tenancies, your old tenancy will end as soon as you sign the new agreement.

If you are acting on behalf of a tenant who has passed away

Please notify us of the death as soon as possible. If you return the keys to us within two weeks, we will not charge rent on the notice period. You will also need to:

  • Give us access to the property at your earliest convenience so we can get ready to carry out any repairs that may be needed
  • Provide us with a copy of the death certificate once you have it
  • Leave the property in a clean and tidy condition, cleared of all furniture and other belongings
  • We also need the Executors of the Will’s contact details or the Next of Kin.

We appreciate this can be an upsetting time for family and friends. We recommend using the Government’s ‘Tell Us Once’ service, which enables you to report a death to most government organisations in one go. Alliance Homes is not included in this service, so you will need to notify us separately.
