Alliance Homes’ Carers Support Service raised £825 through a charity gala, with the total increasing to £1,650 after the housing association matched every pound raised.
The money will be used to provide a special respite day trip for unpaid carers, giving them the opportunity to take time for themselves away from their caring responsibilities.
Jodie Moore, Volunteer Coordinator within Alliance Homes’ Carers Support Service, who organised the fundraiser, said:
"The money raised demonstrates the incredible generosity of our local community and the appreciation people have for unpaid carers. They are often the unsung heroes of our communities. We're grateful to everyone who contributed and we're looking forward to offering carers some well-deserved rest and relaxation.”
For many carers, opportunities for respite can make a real difference.
Cinzia, who cares for her husband Wayne following a motorbike accident that resulted in a brain injury, said the support she’s received from the service has been life changing.
“The day of Wayne’s accident changed everything. I didn’t know what the future would look like, and his recovery hasn’t always been straightforward.
"Caring can be very isolating. It’s usually just me and Wayne, and it’s not easy to leave him even for ten minutes because he needs support all the time.
“Finding Alliance Homes’ Carers Support Service helped me access advice and support, but it’s also meant I’ve been able to take some time for myself, take part in trips and activities.
“For a little while, I can feel more like the person I was before. It doesn’t stop me worrying, but I’m able to focus on my wellbeing too.”
Philippa Armstrong-Owen, Director of Business Services at Alliance Homes, said:
“We recognise that our role extends beyond just housing. We're committed to supporting stronger communities, improving the wellbeing of residents and helping people access the support they need.
"The Carers Support Service and our other support services make a real difference to people's lives every day. We're proud to match the funds raised from the generosity of everyone who supported the event.”
