We understand the benefits that responsible pet ownership can bring to our customers, their families, and the wider community. Our Animals and Pets Policy supports customers to make their own choices, without the need to gain permission from Alliance Homes if they wish to keep a pet.
We ask our customers to follow the rules of their tenancy, lease or restrictive covenant, think carefully about whether a pet is suitable for their home and take responsibility for the daily care and wellbeing of their animals.
Before getting a pet, please consider:
- Do you have enough space for them to live, move and play comfortably?
- Can you provide the care they need, including daily exercise?
- Can you cover the cost of food, bet bills and other extra costs?
If you're getting a dog or a cat, it must be microchipped and registered on the UK Microchip Central Database. Find out how to register your best here.
All dogs must be a legal breed under UK law; you can find a list of banned dogs on the Government’s website.
Your responsibilities as a pet owner
Being a good pet owner means looking after your pet and your home. You must:
- Prevent damage to your home. If any damage is caused, you need to let us know; it’s your responsibility to repair and cover the cost
- Clean up after your pet - indoors, outdoors and in shared spaces
- Keep your pet under control and don’t cause noise or disruption
- Be considerate of your neighbours and remember that not everyone is comfortable around animals.
Problem with a neighbour's pet?
Most pet owners are responsible. We understand that, in some cases, customers may experience problems with a neighbour’s pet, like mess or loud noise. If you have an issue, please contact us to report it.
We’ll do our best to help resolve the problem.
In rare cases, if a pet causes persistent nuisance to other people or damage to property and communal areas, we may withdraw our implied consent to keep a pet. We may also take enforcement action against a tenancy or lease if necessary.
Animal welfare
If you think an animal in one of our homes is being mistreated, report it straight away. Get in touch with your local council, police, or the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
Animal welfare concerns include:
- Too many pets in one home
- Animals being kept in inappropriate conditions
- Animals being bred for sale
- Dangerous or illegal animals being kept in one of our properties.
If you have any questions or want advice about keeping pets in your home, we're here to help.
